Language links communities, enhancing our connections to the people and places around us. So let’s celebrate them!

ViệtSpeak is a non-profit organisation based in Maribyrnong, made up of parents, teachers, academics, activists and community members who advocate for community-centred language education. Angliss Neighbourhood House is an independent community centre in the heart of Footscray, bringing people together to learn, connect and engage in our local community.

Together we are bringing to life a showcase of cultural exchange, language diversity and community engagement through the Language in Community Festival. Uniting language communities, artists, educators, advocates and families from across Melbourne, the festival will be a day of performances and activities dedicated to celebrating language diversity and supporting its continuity from generation to generation. Any and every language community is invited to participate.

The Festival will feature a range of artists and performers including Dr Vicki Couzens, a Keerray Woorroong Gunditjmara multimedia artist, Melbourne-based Sin Frontera Mariachi Duo, Angliss All Abilities Choir and dance group, Jollity Bollywood, amongst others.

There will also be karaoke, kite and badge making workshops, stalls, and other family friendly activities.

Come and hear languages spoken, sung, exclaimed and shared in Vietnamese, Spanish, Greek, Náhuat, Hindi, Hazaragi and more. Join us!

We invite any and every language community to participate! You can contribute to the program and festivities as individuals, families or community organisations. In particular, we are looking for volunteers to help make the event a success, and asking for community contribution to a multilingual karaoke song menu to be played on the day.
