Workshops

PROMO

In anticipation of this year’s Language in Community Festival we will host a series of workshops for community members and groups who are interested in presenting or participating at the festival. These sessions are free and designed to foster discussions and support for those who want to contribute to the 2024 festival program or learn more about language practice.

Venue: Angliss Neighbourhood House – 2/11 Vipont Street, Footscray

1. Translanguage communities

Saturday 22nd June, 10am – 12pm

We often feel a need to be fluent to pass on a language to our children. In this workshop we will explore this misconception and the role of translanguaging to support heritage language at home and in the community. Leading language scholar Dr Julie Choi will give a short presentation on translanguaging followed with activities led by Drama in Education specialist Jodie Whitehurst.

2. Intergenerational language sharing

Saturday 10th August, 10am – 12pm

It takes many generations to build language communities. However, language loss can also occur within one generation. In this session artist and community leader, Grace Vanilau, will share her knowledges and practices of intergenerational language in her community. This will be followed by group discussion and activities.
